Water Quality Advisory Elevated to Boil Water Notice in City of West Kelowna’s Sunnyside/Pritchard System
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The City of West Kelowna, in consultation with the Interior Health Authority, is elevating the Water Quality Advisory in the Sunnyside/Pritchard System to a Boil Water Notice, effective immediately and until further notice, due to increased turbidity near the intake in Okanagan Lake. Turbidity affects the performance of the chlorine disinfection process enabling bacteria, viruses and microorganisms to attach themselves to the suspended particles in the turbid water.

The City of West Kelowna, in consultation with Interior Health Authority, has rescinded the Water Quality Notice in the Lakeview/Rose Valley System.
The water quality advisory was issued May 19, 2020 after the City’s Reservoir Consultant determined an algal bloom was causing high turbidity, which may affect the performance of the chlorine disinfection process.

The cause of the higher than normal turbidity is sediment from spring freshet that is flowing into Okanagan Lake from creeks upstream of the water system’s intake.

Crews have adapted the tap on the Asquith Road side of the Bulk Water Station on Shannon Lake Road to permit touch-free motion activation. The sensor installation enables Lakeview System customers to access the station anytime to get free potable water during the current Water Quality Advisory.

The City of West Kelowna thanks customers for their patience and understanding while crews and officials conducted immediate repairs, completed mandatory post-repair water main flushing and conducted the obligatory consecutive days of system testing and laboratory analyses in.
