Sweeping begins after snow and ice melt from road shoulders. Lower elevation neighbourhoods are completed first, with sweepers moving upwards as the snow melts.
The annual street sweeping of the city's 262 kilometre road network takes about six to eight weeks, depending on weather. Maintenance sweeps are then conducted throughout the remainder of the spring and summer as needed.
How It Works
Signs are posted in neighbourhoods in advance of street sweeping, reminding residents to park off street so equipment can effectively clean the road. Street sweepers may not return to a street for several weeks, as crews continue to clear the remainder of the vast network, so streets with significant on-street parking may not be effectively cleaned until sometime later.
Debris accumulates in the sweeper's collector and must be routinely deposited. Debris is temporarily deposited at unobtrusive sites and crews collect the piles later to keep sweeping moving efficiently.
The City of West Kelowna does not clean Highway 97 and 97C, Westside Road or Westbank First Nation streets. Strata sweeping must be arranged through a board/council or manager/management company.
Residents are asked to sweep all sidewalks that border their lots before streets are cleaned. Please do not sweep debris into piles as this slows the street cleaning work.
Crews Preparing for Street Sweeping
Crews have started cleaning sidewalks and transit stops. They will begin street sweeping March 8, weather permitting. Crews will begin in Westbank Centre, move to other lower lying neighbourhoods such as Gellatly the week of March 15 and gradually work their way to higher elevation neighbourhoods, finishing in Glenrosa by mid-April, weather cooperating. Crews will place signs at neighbourhood entrances in advance, giving a range of dates for street sweeping. Residents should park off street during these times to ensure thorough cleaning. Residents should not sweep debris into piles on the road as this significantly slows progress.
