Street Sweeping
Spring cleaning isn’t just for homes as our annual street sweeping program begins in early March and continues for several weeks to help clear winter debris from roads and sidewalks.
How it works
Removing sand and debris from our streets, municipal parking lots, transit exchanges and bus stops, multiuse corridors and designated major arterial sidewalks is a team effort involving our City crews and contractors.
In advance of street sweeping in your neighbourhood, crews will post “No Parking” signs and, during these times, park off-street weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. to help crews make a clean sweep.
We also ask residents to help by sweeping sand and dirt off sidewalks in front of their homes onto the street, but to not create piles, as it slows sweepers’ progress.

What happens if crews cannot sweep your street due to obstructions?
Crews will clean all unobstructed portions of a City street when they are in your neighbourhood; and, then they move on to the next neighbourhood in order to ensure efficiency and keep on schedule. In the event of a street obstruction, crews will return in several weeks, when the main program is completed in all neighbourhoods. To help alleviate obstructions, the City releases information publicly to residents in advance of the program to remind them of how they can help crews make a clean sweep. Our crews also post signs at neighbourhood main entrances in advance of street sweeping, reminding residents to park off street so equipment can effectively clean the road.
What happens to the sand and debris?
Debris accumulates in the sweeper's collector and must be routinely deposited at unobtrusive sites until crews can collect the piles.
