Tax deadline approaches - use these tips to pay taxes, and claim your BC Home Owner Grant on time

With the 2021 tax payment deadline quickly approaching in just one week, the City of West Kelowna has pointers to help you skip lines and avoid wait times at Municipal Hall and to claim your Home Owner Grant on time, through the Province of BC.
Lines are longest during the final week leading up to the 4:30 p.m. July 2 deadline.
Did you know?
  • If you have not received your City of West Kelowna property tax notice in the mail, email us at taxes@westkelownacity.ca and we will provide you with a copy.
  • New for 2021! Claim your provincial Home Owner Grant through the Province of BC by visiting gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant or calling 1-888-355-2700;
    • Record your confirmation number;
    • The provincial government will send your confirmation to the City so you do not need to follow up with our Finance staff once you’ve claimed the grant; and,
  • We recommend paying online through your bank or credit union or using your financial institution’s telebanking service;
    • For online banking, search West Kelowna as the payee and select Taxes; the account number, starting with 364, is your roll number without any dots/periods or spaces;
    • Record your payment confirmation number.
  • Make non-cash payments using our 24/7 drop box next to the Municipal Hall main entrance at 2760 Cameron Road;
    • Make cheques payable to City of West Kelowna, record your roll number in the memo line and include the remittance stub from your property tax notice;
    • Place everything together in an envelope before putting in the drop box.
  • If paying in-person, masks are mandatory in Municipal Hall and social distancing is required;
    • We accept cash, debit, cheque or money order;
    • We do not accept credit cards; we do accept cheques from credit card companies; and, you may be able to pay by credit card for a fee through third party services such as Plastiq or Pay Simply.
A ten per cent penalty is applied July 3 to any taxes owing and all home owner grant amounts that are unclaimed before the deadline. The late penalty is statutory and City staff cannot reverse the charge.
