Reminder of school zones back in effect
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022
September is here and we welcome a new school year. As a reminder to motorists, kids have returned to class and school zones are back in effect.
To keep everyone safe:
- slowdown to 30 km/h in school zones from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days
- yield to buses
- when a school bus turns on its flashing red lights, vehicles in all lanes, in both directions, must stop
- use caution around public transit too, as students may be walking into the street, in front of or behind a stopped bus
- allow buses to pull back into traffic
- don’t look down - leave the phone alone
In school and playground zones, speeding fines range from $196 to $483.
West Kelowna RCMP and Speed Watch volunteers will monitor speeds in school zones.
When it comes to parking around schools:
- Do not block bus stops, crosswalks, driveways, sidewalks, or create hazards for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and other motorists
West Kelowna Bylaw Officers will patrol around schools in the first few weeks to educate drivers and encourage better parking habits; parking violations can net fines of $50 per offence.
