Office closure: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day

Sept. 30 marks National Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day, a day to reflect on the tragic history of residential schools, honour survivors and remember the children who never returned home. 

This day is an opportunity to listen, learn and deepen our understanding of the history and lasting impacts of residential schools, and the ongoing work of reconciliation.

There are many ways to reflect and support Indigenous reconciliation in our community:

• Support Indigenous businesses, authors, artists and musicians.
• Explore First Nations stories through books and films.
• Learn nsyilxcən, through Kelowna Museums.
• Wear an orange shirt from an Indigenous organization or business.
• Visit the Sncəwips Heritage Museum.
• Visit A National Crime: The Residential School Experience in Canada at the Okanagan Regional Library’s West Kelowna branch until Oct. 3.
• Participate in local events on Sept. 30. Learn more, visit Westbank First Nation.

Take a moment to reflect on the histories, cultures and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, including the syilx/Okanagan people, on whose traditional territory we live and work.

City administrative buildings closed on Sept. 30

City of West Kelowna offices will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Regular hours will resume on Thursday, Oct. 1.

BC Transit and garbage collection services will continue on their regular schedules, with no changes to service days or hours.
