General Local Election nomination period and recruitment underway

Starting today, candidates for the 2022 General Local Election can submit their completed Notice of Nomination in person to the Chief Election Officer, at Municipal Hall, 2760 Cameron Road, in West Kelowna, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Nomination papers successfully received before 4 p.m. on Sept. 9 will be officially declared to run as a candidate for City Council or School District No. 23 Board of Education Trustee.

Nomination packages are available for pick up and include the offices of Mayor (one), Councillor (six) and School Trustee (one), for a four-year term (November 2022 to October 2026).

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day (Oct. 15, 2022)

  • resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed

  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law

Candidates for West Kelowna Council require 25 nominators. School District No. 23 Board of Education School Trustee candidates require two nominators. Nominators must be eligible voters who either live in, or own a property in, West Kelowna.

Working the election is one way community members can engage in local government in action and support their community. Recruitment is underway for election officials to work at local polling stations on Oct. 5, 7, 11, 13 and 15, 2022. Applications can be completed online or in person at Municipal Hall by 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13. Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14 and Thursday, Sept. 15.
