Community invited to FireSmart Family Day on May 24

FireSmart Family Day is Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Hall #31 at 3651 Old Okanagan Highway. Meet firefighters, enjoy the kids’ activity zone and free food and refreshments, watch live demonstrations, and learn how to FireSmart your home.

Summer Recreation Guide due to be released on May 23

Recreation and Culture staff are getting set to release the 2025 Summer Rec Guide on May 23. The summer guide is full of excellent events, programs and activities, such as Music in the Park, Park Play Days and more. Visit westkelownacity.ca/recguide.

Council welcomes neighbourhood associations

Council invited neighbourhood associations and the Greater Westside Board of Trade to provide updates on their many community initiatives. Presenters included the executive director of the Greater Westside Board of Trade and presidents and directors of the Casa Loma, Gellatly Bay/Goats Peak and Lakeview Heights Community Associations, Glenrosa Residents Association and Shannon Lake Neighbourhood Association. Delegation on Rose Valley Water

Council heard a delegation from a ratepayer in the Rose Valley Water Service Area regarding funding for the system. View the delegation via the May 20 webcast.

Quarterly update provided on Rose Valley Source Water Improvements

Staff provided a quarterly update on Rose Valley Source Water Improvements, which will include a potassium permanganate system that will be completed this summer to address manganese in the reservoir. Staff also noted that an existing aeration system in the reservoir has been refurbished to help address manganese and algae this year until the new aeration system is installed in 2026. FireSmart and wildfire mitigation update provided

Council was provided with a staff update and presentation on the City of West Kelowna’s 2024 FireSmart and Wildfire Mitigation initiatives. West Kelowna Fire Rescue leads FireSmart initiatives, including public education and the homeowner grant program, and completed 131 home assessments and awarded 21 grants last year. The Parks Department conducts wildfire mitigation, and crews completed work on 41 projects in 2024. The report and presentation also provide a look at the activities underway and planned for 2025.
