FAQ
Following a competitive procurement process, the City has selected the YMCA Southern Interior BC as the future operator of Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre with operational responsibility transitioning effective January 1, 2027.
Right now for the community, it will remain business as usual while transition planning takes place. The YMCA's immediate priorities are maintaining service continuity, supporting staff and facility users, and ensuring programs and services continue to meet the needs of residents.
Additional information and updates will be shared as transition planning progresses over the coming months. Read the FAQ for more information.
Why is Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre changing operators?
Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre (JBMAC) is owned by the City of West Kelowna and the City has a contract with a company to operate the facility. Active Living Enterprises has been operating JBMAC for almost 30 years and they advised the City they would not seek another operating term. We want to thank Active Living for their many years of excellent service to the community.
The City of West Kelowna conducted a formal procurement process and has selected the YMCA of Southern Interior BC (YSIBC) as the future operator of JBMAC for a five-year term, with operational responsibility transitioning to YSIBC effective January 1, 2027.
Read the announcement.
Are the fees going to change? Will I need a membership?
The City of West Kelowna sets the user fees and Council has approved the rates for the next three years. Drop-in rates will remain the same under the new operator and they can be found in the Fees and Charges Bylaw.
JBMAC currently operates as a fee-for-service facility and no membership is required. No decisions have been made about adding a membership option at this time.
I’ve purchased a punch card and haven’t used it up. Can I use passes after Jan 1, 2027?
Yes.
Will programs, services, or facility hours change after Jan 1, 2027?
No decisions have been made regarding operating hours or services, and this will be communicated clearly if any future changes are being considered.
The City expects YMCA Southern Interior BC to maintain similar programs or develop new programs to meet community need. The goal of YMCA Southern Interior BC is to provide continuity for participants, and the community. YSIBC will work closely with the City of West Kelowna and the outgoing operator to understand current programming, services, operating hours, and community needs.
Should changes be considered, they will be carefully evaluated and communicated clearly and well in advance.
Is Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre going to be replaced?
The pool is not being replaced at this time. Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre is owned by the City of West Kelowna and the City is responsible for decisions related to capital planning and replacement of JBMAC. Building a new pool has been identified as a community priority, but there is currently no anticipated timeline for when JBMAC will be replaced.
