YMCA of Southern Interior BC selected as future operator of Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre
Date of issue: Friday, Aug. 21, 2026
The City of West Kelowna is pleased to announce the YMCA of Southern Interior BC (YSIBC) has been selected as the future operator of the Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre (JBMAC), with operational responsibility transitioning to YSIBC effective January 1, 2027.
Active Living Enterprises has been operating JBMAC for almost 30 years and advised they would not seek another operating term.
“Thank you to Active Living Enterprises for their many years of service in our community running the Johnson Bentely Memorial Aquatic Centre. So many families learned to swim at JBMAC or participated in the various classes and activities offered, creating a welcoming space not only for health and fitness, but also as a place for people to connect,” said Patrick Pulak, General Manager of Operations at the City of West Kelowna. “We look forward to the YMCA of Southern Interior BC assuming operational responsibility for JBMAC and continuing to provide exceptional service and programs in West Kelowna.”
The selection follows a competitive procurement process led by the City. As transition planning begins, YSIBC's focus will be on learning, relationship building, and working collaboratively with the current operator, facility staff, members, user groups, and community partners to ensure a smooth and respectful transition.
"We are honoured to have been selected by the City of West Kelowna and recognize the important contributions of those who have built and supported JBMAC over the years," said Allyson Graf, President and CEO of YMCA of Southern Interior BC. "Our priority is to build on the strong foundation already in place while ensuring a positive transition for staff, participants, and the broader community."
The YMCA also acknowledges the commitment and passion demonstrated by all proponents involved in the process, including those with a long history of serving the facility and community. The organization is committed to approaching the transition with respect and a focus on community benefit.
For the community, it will remain business as usual while transition planning takes place. Fall programming details are available at westkelownacity.ca/recguide and registration for Swim for Life lessons opens on Sept 2 at 6 a.m. The YMCA's immediate priorities are maintaining service continuity, supporting staff and facility users, and ensuring programs and services continue to meet the needs of residents.
Celebrating 45 years of service in the Southern Interior, YSIBC brings extensive experience operating recreation, aquatics, health, child care, employment, and community programs throughout the region. The transition represents an opportunity to further strengthen community impact while maintaining the high-quality program and aquatic services West Kelowna residents have come to expect.
Additional information and updates will be shared as transition planning progresses over the coming months.
