Transportation Master Plan maps out future active transportation

At the June 9 Regular Council Meeting, the City of West Kelowna Council adopted the updated Transportation Master Plan establishing a comprehensive and forward-looking framework to guide how people and goods move through West Kelowna.

“As our city continues to grow, we want to make sure we’re planning ahead in a thoughtful and balanced way. This Transportation Master Plan helps us do just that,” said West Kelowna Mayor Gord Milsom. “Through community engagement and collaboration with our partners, we’ve developed a plan that supports safer streets, better transportation options and a more connected community for years to come. It sets us on a positive path to improve how we move around West Kelowna and stay connected to the places and people that matter most.”

The Transportation Master Plan is a long-range strategy that will guide how the City plans, manages, and invests in walking and cycling routes, transit services, and road networks for the next 20 years and beyond. Long-term transportation planning is essential to achieving the community’s vision of vibrant city centres with complete, connected communities.

The Transportation Master Plan update was developed through a three-phase, multi-year process involving technical studies and extensive community engagement, and it aligns with the Official Community Plan update. The plan established a comprehensive and future focused framework which will support multi-modal transportation systems that improve safety and increase mobility choices for a growing population.

Implementing the recommendations of the Transportation Master Plan to provide and help the community shift towards additional sustainable travel options is one of Council’s Strategic Priorities under the Foster Safety and Well-being pillar.
