City receives Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

The City of West Kelowna was once again recognized for its excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting and has received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the 2024 Annual Report.

Kalamoir Park Wildfire response praised

Council thanked everyone who responded to the Kalamoir Park Wildfire including the BC Wildfire Service, West Kelowna Fire Rescue, Kelowna and other local fire departments, RCMP, first responders, emergency operations centre staff and Emergency Support Services. Council praised residents for their resolve and resilience and commended the Regional District of Central Okanagan and Friends of Kalamoir Park whose past wildfire mitigation initiatives reduced the spread and intensity of the fire.

Local election candidate information session being held

Candidates interested in running in the local general election this fall are invited to attend an information session with Mayor Milsom in Council Chambers on July 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to learn about the responsibilities of elected office and what to expect as a candidate.

Music in the Park returns June 26

Council invited our community to attend Music in the Park, the free, family-friendly concert series that returns this summer every Friday night from June 26 to August 21 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Memorial Park.

Enjoy free Canada Day festivities

Council also invited the community to join them at free Canada Day festivities on Wednesday, July 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Memorial Park for cupcakes, family activities booths and inflatables. Craft and food vendors will also be on site.

Regional economic development commission model under evaluation

The Regional District of Central Okanagan is reviewing the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission’s service delivery models that will strengthen municipal priorities and deliver regionally collaborative benefits.

Infill housing zoning amendments to be considered for adoption

Council gave third reading to Zoning Bylaw amendments to help remove barriers to infill housing, support the Infill Housing Strategy and meet Housing Accelerator Fund commitments. Council directed changes to the bylaw to maintain carriage house screening and setback requirements for above-ground patios. Council will consider adoption following B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit approval.

Affordable transit pass program not endorsed

Council received information on the Affordable Transit Pass Study and Pilot Program being led by the City of Kelowna. Council did not endorse the City of West Kelowna’s participation in the Affordable Transit Pass Program; however, will continue to participate in the Emergency Transit Assistance Program.

Annual transit operating agreement approved

Council approved the 2026–2027 B.C. Transit Annual Operating Agreement, which outlines service levels, revenue projections and operating costs.

Temporary home for rowing club identified

Council approved staff to negotiate an agreement with the Kelowna Rowing Club to use Rotary Trails Park for storage and operations for three years, with a two-year extension option, while a permanent site is sought.

2025 Annual Report presented

Council received the City's 2025 Annual Report, which outlines the city’s accomplishments and audited financial statements of the last full operating year ended Dec. 31.

Statement of Financial Information reported

Council received the 2025 Statement of Financial Information (SOFI), which lists Council and employee remuneration and expenses and payments to suppliers.

Road rehabilitation program contract awarded

Council awarded a $1.6 million contract to Emil Anderson Construction to repave Thacker Drive and Lower Glenrosa and Elliott Roads as part of the 2026 Road Rehabilitation Program.

1179 Westside Road development proposal advances

Council gave first and second readings to Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw amendments which, if adopted, permit a mix of low-density residential, rural residential, and agricultural land uses at 1179 Westside Road. A public hearing will be scheduled prior to third reading.

Short-term rental regulation and enforcement update

Council received an update on the City’s current regulatory framework, enforcement practices, and operational considerations related to short-term rentals in West Kelowna.

Council endorses underground transmission lines for BC Hydro's West Kelowna Transmission Project

After receiving public input on May 26, Council will write BC Hydro to advocate for underground transmission improvements. The preferred alignment is Option 1, on Old Okanagan Highway, followed by Option 3a. The project will create a second power source and reliable service for the Greater Westside.

Council approved the Communications and Engagement Strategic Plan, which reinforces providing accurate, timely and transparent information for residents, media, community partners, Council, and staff. The plan sets the framework for effective communication to ensure residents are informed, engaged and connected to City initiatives.

New bylaw officer appointed

Council appointed Kevin Bohnet as a Bylaw Compliance and Enforcement Officer.

Election bylaw amendments adopted

Council adopted Local Government Election Bylaw amendments that allow electors to designate an authorized person to pick up their mail ballot package and the chief election officer to establish mail ballot drop-off locations.

Election sign bylaw amendments adopted

Council adopted Sign Bylaw amendments to prohibit election signs in medians, including roundabouts, establish enforcement fines for signs placed in prohibited locations.
