Power up safely to protect your home from lithium-ion battery fires

Date of Issue: Monday, May 11, 2026

New devices using lithium-ion rechargeable batteries like e-bikes, scooters, phones and cordless tools bring convenience, but they can pose risks if not used properly.

Lithium-ion batteries are now common in many household items and are generally safe, but improper charging or damage can lead to fires.

“As more households rely on battery-powered devices, it’s important to understand how to use and charge them safely. A few simple habits can help prevent fires and protect what matters most,” said West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund.

A few simple precautions can help keep your home and family safe:

  • Use only certified chargers and equipment, preferably the charger that came with the device.
  • Charge devices in open, well-ventilated areas, away from exits.
  • Do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or on a couch.
  • Never tamper with devices to try and modify their function or battery life.
  • Avoid overcharging and unplug devices once charging is complete.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your devices’ use and care.
  • Remove e-cigarette batteries before storing devices in pockets or bags.
  • Do not place batteries in household garbage; recycle them safely.

Check batteries regularly and stop using them immediately if you notice:

  • Odour
  • Swelling or changes in shape
  • Discolouration
  • Excess heat
  • Leaking
  • Unusual noise

A small amount of care can help protect your home, your devices and the people around you.
