Roads and sidewalks maintenance and improvements are the most highly requested services in West Kelowna. We respond to requests on a priority basis. Thank you for your patience.

The city and its contractors clean, clear, maintain and upgrade 262km of roads (524 lane kilometres), 1,750 streetlights, 65km of sidewalks and paved paths, 21km of multi-use trails and 8km of bike lanes.

You can submit a request for service for a City of West Kelowna street or streetlight at anytime online. Our hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, excluding holidays. Requests made after hours will be processed the next business day.

After hours road maintenance service requests can also be made by calling AEL at 1-866-353-3136.

Highways 97 and 97C, Westside Road and Westbank First Nation streets are maintained by AIM Roads; contact information can be found on the Province of British Columbia's Highway Contractor Maintenance webpage (Service Area 8 - South Okanagan). For maintenance of the William R Bennett Bridge (from approach 40 meters north of the Abbott Street intersection and 187 meters south of the south bridge abutment, please contact Protrans at 1-888-769-2925.

If you live in a strata, please check with your association or manager on maintenance issues.

  • Drainage issues

  • Ice and snow control (winter maintenance)
  • Parking problems
  • Pavement patching and potholes
  • Sidewalk maintenance
  • Street sweeping

Boulevards - Working in the Right of Way

Boulevards are sections of land between property lines and the edges of street pavement.  If no pavement or curb exists, the boulevard is the area between a property line and the traveled portion of road. Boulevards include, but are not limited to; curbs, road shoulders, sidewalks, ditches, plantings, etc.

The Good Neighbour Bylaw 0151 (See Part 8 – Property Maintenance) requests that homeowners and residents maintain boulevards and lanes adjacent to their property for the beautification of the city, the enjoyment of all and to reduce fire and flood risks. Maintenance includes watering, weeding, mowing, trimming, and litter clean-up. The city does not provide this service; so, by doing your part to keep boulevards and lanes clean, you keep your property taxes lower each year.

All works and uses in the road right of way require city approval through a Municipal Highway or Special Event permit

If you are unsure of the property line, you can find it on WestMap.

We regulate boulevard use to:

  • Clear the way for cyclists and pedestrians and garbage trucks, snowplows and street sweepers

  • Enable access to cable, fibre optic, hydro, sewer and water lines

  • Give the community more control over how their boulevards and frontages to their homes look

  • Maintain clear sight lines at intersections and accesses

  • Make it easier to exit the passenger side of your car when parking on the street

Current Projects

For a list of current, major road and sidewalk projects including the annual Road Rehabilitation and Pedestrian Improvement Programs, please visit Capital Projects.
Illegal Dumping

To report Illegal Dumping within city boundaries call 778-797-2225 or you can submit an online service request.

To report Illegal Dumping on crown land, please click here.

 Improvement Requests

Many upgrades to bike lanes, roads, sidewalks and transit service are mapped out in our Pedestrian and Bicycle and Transportation Master plans. Recommendations from our plans are placed, on priority bases, in the 10 Year Capital Plan.

To inquire about or make a request for transportation infrastructure upgrades, including bike lanes, bridges, bus stops, crosswalks, roads, sidewalks, signs, streetlights and transit, please contact the Engineering Department at 778-797-8840.

 Parking

Do not park on street for up to 48 hours after a heavy snowfall to give crews the time they need to plow and sand streets.

Parking is regulated under the City of West Kelowna's Traffic Bylaw; see Section 12.1 (ad). Fines of up to $50 can be levied for vehicles parks on the street that prevent snow plows, sand trucks and street sweepers from conducting road maintenance.

Report complaints to Bylaw Enforcement at 778-797-8810 or submit an online service request.

Snow Control Priority List

Snow control is conducted on a priority basis; and, the following considerations are used to determine the order in which roads are cleared within the municipality:
  • Arterial and collector roads, transit routes and roads with steep grades (public safety)
  • School zones and/or school bus routes; town centres and population centres
  • All other local and rural roads

To learn more, visit our Snow and Ice Control web page.

Speed Enforcement

To request speed enforcement, please contact West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.

To inquire about traffic calming initiatives, please contact the City of West Kelowna's Engineering Department at 778-797-8840.

Streetlights

Let us know if a streetlight is out or flickering. When you submit an online service request, please try and get the number marked on the post, if available, or provide the closest address to the street light that is out; crews most often replace lights during the day and cannot effectively confirm that the light is out without this information. You may refer to our streetlight map too if you you wish. Please submit your service request now.

 Street Sweeping

Sweeping begins after snow and ice melt from road shoulders. Lower elevation neighbourhoods are completed first, with sweepers moving upwards as the snow melts.

Crews have started cleaning sidewalks and transit stops. They will begin street sweeping March 8, weather permitting. Crews will begin in Westbank Centre, move to other lower lying neighbourhoods such as Gellatly the week of March 15 and gradually work their way to higher elevation neighbourhoods, finishing in Glenrosa by mid-April, weather cooperating. Crews will place signs at neighbourhood entrances in advance, giving a range of dates for street sweeping. Residents should park off street during these times to ensure thorough cleaning. Residents should not sweep debris into piles on the road as this significantly slows progress.

Street sweeping is tentatively set to begin March 8 and run until the end of April. Please visit our Street Sweeping page for more information.
