FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021
The lights are being hung around the City with care as West Kelowna gets ready to officially kick off its festive season with two holiday traditions – Light Up and Twinkle Tour.
Light Up will be held on Brown Road, from Main Street to Gossett Road, Friday, Dec. 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The holiday lights will be turned on at 6 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will be held in keeping with Interior Health requirements for outdoor “flow through events”. Masks are recommended. The adapted format will allow visitors to move along the street in their own groups and take part in activity stations, and interact with vendors over short periods of time. To discourage gathering in large groups at specific sites, activities will be spread out and no live performances or speaking events will take place. Fun activity stations will include favourites like the Treat Station and Letters to Santa and community groups will be on site along the way to hand out warm drinks.
Subject to weather, the City will also treat our community to a high-altitude fireworks show, starting at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are being launched in Westbank Centre so that several neighbourhoods can view the show from home or at a distance. The show’s exact location is not being provided this year to discourage large stay-in-place gatherings. Those whose views of Westbank Centre are obscured by Mt. Boucherie or other buildings and landmarks may wish to find a better vantage point prior to the show.
To keep the holiday cheer going, the City will also host the second annual Twinkle Tour, from Dec. 1 through Jan. 3. Submit your own home to be included on the tour at ourwk.ca/twinkletour, where you can also download the map to take your self-guided tour. The tour will also include a fun scavenger hunt as you go.
The 2021 Twinkle Tour will also include a Most Festive Contest with prize winners to be announced in four categories:
- Most festive residence
- Most festive business
- Most festive street/cul de sac
- Most festive other category
The contest entry period will close Dec. 15. Judging will take place Dec. 17 and winners will be announced on Dec. 21.
The City has also decorated several public locations as part of the tour including:
- Brown Road
- CNR Wharf and Gellatly Waterfront and Bridge
- Mt. Boucherie Recreation Complex, the four fire halls, Municipal Hall and the Elliott Road operations building
- Various roundabouts in the City
The Mt. Boucherie Recreation Complex will also host a number of holiday-themed Public Skate and Parent and Tot Skate sessions throughout December. All holiday themed activities include lights, decorations and music. These programs will start Saturday, Dec. 4 and continue throughout the holiday season, ending Monday, Jan. 3. Find more information in the Winter Rec Guide, which will be available on the City’s website starting Friday, Nov. 26 at westkelownacity.ca/recguide.
