FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 29, 2020
The City of West Kelowna reminds motorists that crews will close Gellatly Road Bridge over Powers Creek for approximately three months beginning January 30 for an essential infrastructure project.
The city’s contractor will remove the existing bridge, which has reached the end of its lifespan, and install a new structure that includes added sidewalk on the upstream side, improved bike lanes and a new higher bridge deck with an asphalt road surface.
Although vehicles will not be able to cross over Powers Creek, crews will maintain pedestrian and cycling access as much as possible.
All area businesses remain open and the city has placed digital signage along Highway 97 to help motorists with navigation to these destinations. Visitors of the Cove, West Kelowna Yacht Club, Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park, Gellatly Heritage Park, Glen Canyon Regional Park, the Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant and all destinations south of Powers Creek can use the Highway 97/Glenrosa Interchange and travel via Gellatly Road South. Motorists can still access all points north of Powers Creek via Boucherie Road or Highway 97 and Gellatly Road North, as per usual.
The City is closing Rotary Trails Park and parking lot to provide a construction staging area.
Construction is expected to continue through April.
