Date of Issue: Wednesday, June 25, 2025

The City of West Kelowna is upgrading the Horizon Drive Active Transportation Corridor to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity. This active transportation corridor project will enhance pedestrian and cyclist access between key neighbourhoods, schools, parks, and commercial areas.

Construction is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 2, and will continue throughout the summer, with anticipated completion in fall 2025. Crews will work weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the possibility of occasional weekend work.

Thanks to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit for providing funding of up to $500,000 through the B.C. Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program towards the Horizon Drive Active Transportation Corridor Project.

What work is being done

The road upgrades will include:

  • 1.1 kilometres of new sidewalks, curbs, and gutters along the west side of Horizon Drive.
  • 2.2 kilometres of new dedicated bike lanes on both sides of Horizon Drive for safer cycling.
  • Upgraded street lighting, storm improvements and ditching.
  • New road markings and signage to enhance visibility and safety for all users.

Please note the construction schedule is subject to weather conditions, contractor schedule changes and other factors.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution, follow all posted speed limits and expect minor delays when travelling through the work area.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction and cyclists are encouraged to dismount through the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles and school bus service will be maintained at all times. The contractor will coordinate local access for residents living within the work area to ensure continued access to their homes.

The City of West Kelowna thanks residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while crews work to create an active transportation corridor along Horizon Drive.
