Lions Hall Transferred to City

For Immediate Release
March 28, 2017

Mayor Doug Findlater and members of West Kelowna Council are pleased to announce that negotiations with the Westbank Lions Club to transfer ownership of its Westbank Lions Hall to the City of West Kelowna have been successfully completed and the hall will remain a community recreational and event facility.

Mayor Findlater announced at Council’s meeting today that the Westbank Lions Club has agreed to transfer the hall and the land it sits on to the City by way of a charitable trust. The City will take over management of the historic facility and both parties mutually agree that the facility, located at 2466 Main Street, must continue to serve the West Kelowna community as it has since first established in 1928.

“For decades the Westbank Lions Club has done a tremendous job maintaining this facility that has hosted countless weddings, public meetings, cultural and recreational events and community celebrations. It is a vital amenity for members of our community and the City is extremely honoured that the Lions Club has trusted us with its care,” says Mayor Findlater. “On behalf of the entire community, I thank the Westbank Lions Club and their numerous volunteers for this gift and want to assure everyone that the City is committed to ensuring it is there for West Kelowna citizens to use.”

"The Westbank Lions Club has always been guided by our motto for the community hall, “Our Community Hall, Your Community Hall, Everybody’s Community Hall,” and we are very happy that it is going to continue to operate in that same spirit,” says Jack Lucas, Westbank Lions Club President. “I thank all of the members of the Westbank Lions who have helped operate the hall over the years. In particular, I want to thank long-time employees Judy Ingram and Nancy Landsiedel for their excellent and dedicated service.”

The contract for the transfer of the facility indicates that the land will always be used for the purpose of operating a community hall for the benefit of residents of West Kelowna and that the land may not be transferred, conveyed, encumbered, mortgaged, redeveloped or otherwise disposed of. The hall will also be prominently identified as the Westbank Lions Community Centre. The municipality will maintain the current leases with not for profits, including the Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Office and the Westside Youth Centre.

As of April 1, 2017 the City will administer bookings for the hall. All previously booked events will be honoured. For booking information, please call 250-768-2322.
